We sat down with the New Jersey producer to talk grunge, AI, family, and why ‘Deep Down’ feels like a reset button.
Okay so ‘Deep Down’ is out and people are losing their minds a little bit. Did you expect that reaction?
Ha, I love hearing that. I’m really excited that people are connecting with the song because Deep Down was incredibly important to me creatively.
I don’t really see it as a reset button though – it feels more like the next evolution of Almost Alive. Every album has explored a different side of the project, and Undercurrent is the one that reconnects me to the rock music I grew up loving.
Let’s go back a bit. Almost Alive has been this expansive, evolving thing: Hypnotica, Pulse, all this cinematic electronic rock territory. And then you come out with a straight-up grunge track. What happened?
I think after making two albums in that darker cinematic electronic-rock space, I just wanted to explore something more raw and direct.
The funny thing is, the first time I experimented with a grunge-style track, I immediately felt inspired by it. It reminded me why I fell in love with rock music in the first place. That excitement quickly turned into the idea for Undercurrent.
That said, I’ll absolutely return to the cinematic side again in the future. I already have ideas for where that goes next.
You’re still using Suno and ChatGPT as your production tools. Does working in a grunge direction change how that process feels?
The overall workflow is still very similar, but the musical goals change a lot.
With grunge, I’m chasing something more human, raw, and emotionally immediate. The production choices, lyrics, vocal energy, and guitar feel all need to support that. So even though the tools are the same, the mindset behind the creative decisions is definitely different.
The lyrics are pretty honest – stuff beneath the surface, things you haven’t fully dealt with. Is that a personal thing or more of a universal idea you were working with?
It’s probably a little of both. I wanted Deep Down to capture the emotional atmosphere that made classic grunge music resonate so strongly.
A lot of those albums felt inward-looking, unresolved, and emotionally heavy in a very real way. I tried to bring that same energy into Undercurrent overall — almost like the soundtrack to a cold, rainy Seattle afternoon.
You’ve got two more singles coming before more drops: What’s the vibe going into the rest of the campaign?
The second single, “Hit Refresh,†is already out and goes in a more alternative/indie-rock direction with influences closer to Weezer and Green Day.
Then right before the album release comes “Orbiting My Own Life,†which has a lot of forward energy and a more driving rock feel inspired by bands like Foo Fighters.
Honestly, this album had so many songs I loved that picking singles was difficult. I’m excited for people to eventually hear the full experience front to back.
Last one – Almost Alive stands for Technology, Creativity, and Family. How does ‘Deep Down’ connect to all three of those?
“Deep Down†represents the technology and creativity side very strongly because it showcases how far AI-assisted music creation has come. A lot of listeners genuinely don’t realize the song was made that way at first.
The family side is more present in the overall project and some of the other songs across Undercurrent. But even with a heavier grunge track like this one, the emotional connection behind the music is still very real.
