I’m pretty sure as a result of this song there’s a generation of people who can only count past five in Spanish by saying cinco, twice. It’s a straightforward story of a guy trying to be cool and failing miserably (we all knew one). There’s not much to think about just enjoy the track and don’t get bogged down with anything. A nice straight forward riff tying everything together all bundled into an easy catchy package. I don’t think it’s a universally enjoyable track for everyone but for those who get it it’s great.

If you were around at the time of this release you’ll no doubt know it well and the video that went with it. The Offspring were a group who seemed prevalent amongst a number of bands who just seemed to be having fun, making music that was just enjoyable and full of energy (Greenday*, Sum 41, The Bloodhound gang). What punk became, still with all it’s energy intact but without any care for politics. A skater movement before Avril Lavigne took it mainstream. I used to enjoy it as a teenager and wonder if there are still bands that occupy that spot in modern music that I’m just not aware of or have no interest in listening to?
Another thought it’s weird to think of the cultural references that people won’t get now. “You know you can always go on Ricki Lake” will mean nothing to some people, they won’t even know who Jerry Springer is!
*For those unaware Greenday weren’t political in the slightest until later on in their career.
