Reasonably recently I got the pleasure of watching Turin Brakes live for the first time in about 20 years since catching them a couple of times in Liverpool back in the early 2000s. The Brewery Arts in Kendal is a great venue, though I’m still not sure on sitting down for gigs, and rather a mix of visitors as the Dub Pistols played in the adjoining room. The night with Turin Brakes was fantastic though, such an energy for a stripped back tour. All four members with their “westlife” stools, they sadly missed the rousing standing up in any song.
They’re a band who’s debut album I listened to so many times and then pretty much lost track of. Ahead of the gig I did have a listen to some of those intervening albums and they are great, but if you say “Turin Brakes” to me then the first line I’ll go to is “two black lines streaming out like a guidance line” as I’m sure will many other Turin Brakes fans.
But by far and away the best thing from this track is the guitar solo, it’s as solid and impressive as anything else you’ll hear from the great guitarist soloists through the years. It’s proof, as well, that you don’t need to be rocking an electric guitar to pick out a great piece of virtuoso guitar as I’m sure most people would imagine when you say “guitar solo”.
So go and give it a listen, in fact give the whole album a listen you won’t be disappointed.
And strangely after I earmarked this song to write about on Mumubl.com a new podcast dropped from The Song Sommelier from (the rather handsome) Gale Parijanian and his guitar playing, so check that out as well! -Â https://www.songsommelier.com/that-one-guitar-gale-parijanian
