I’m sure I’ve said before on here but the power of music to conjure up thoughts of different times and places is sometimes phenomenal. For this track in particular it’s time I spent living in New Zealand. I can vividly remember hearing this track on the radio travelling around in the minibuses we used to drive around in out there.

Matchbox Twenty are much less of a well known band back here, although most people would recognise lead singer Rob Thomas’ vocals on the Santana track “Smooth” which was a big hit in 2000. I was aware of some other stuff though having listened to 3 A.M. (another great track) when I picked up a guitar magazine that had the track in when I was first learning to play.

Whilst I was out in New Zealand they released Exile on Mainstream a greatest hits compilation with a few additional new tracks, How far we’ve come amongst the new ones. It was picked up by the radio stations and blasted out over there and I picked up the album as a great way to explore some of their older stuff as well.

I’m not sure what it was about the track that stuck with me, maybe just the bombardment of it being played so much. There’s a great drive propelling the song along though, the drum’s just usher the whole song through from the opening beats to the fading “Let’s see how far we’ve come” at the end. They kick off at a pace and they don’t let up for the whole song pushing an urgency in to Rob Thomas’ vocals at times. I won’t pretend to be able to decipher the full meaning of the lyrics, but then that’s the case for many songs.

The track though, light, easy pop-ish rock with a few catchy refrains that help it stick nicely.
