When it comes to recommending Alice in chains I would go with their unsung catalogue because everyone praises stuff like Dirt and Jar of Flies and those are both masterpieces. But I like to go with their self titled album from, I believe, 1995 and the interesting things about that album is that’s kind of when Layne Staley was dying, dying of heroine use at the time but still he managed to put out these venomous vocal performances. The performances, you could tell they were coloured in some way by addiction and they were troubled but that added to the honesty of the whole thing. And it was brilliant. I would say their self titled album, listen to songs like Brush Away, Head Creeps and Frogs.

Its just brilliant work and it’s stranger and more subtle than Dirt. I own both, you can enjoy both, but the self titled is under appreciated because he was fading out at that time, I find those things just fascinating when you could just be loosening the reigns and falling back into oblivion but they decide to give things another go.

People have ridiculous judgements about that kind of stuff, I’ve been through addiction myself and its amazing how people look down on you. People would be shocked from the outside how much people habitually look down on you. People are addicted to all kind of things but its extremely difficult when you’re actually going through it and someone like Layne Staley definitely went through it with a variety of things. I just admire when somebody stands up and does some art in the process.

Its kind of like, its adding some drama to life, he basically stood up when he didn’t have too much left to give and the album is fantastic and challenging.
