Early Louis — the Hot Five thing. We play an absolutely raw version of Tiger Rag that our guitar player James arranged. I remember doing a saxophone quartet arrangement of Tiger Rag at university, sticking to this live version of Louis Armstrong playing it — our version was nowhere as good, nowhere near as fast, wasn’t really a jazz combo. But it was that figure, and the energy of the whole way he plays the trumpet.

Early Duke Ellington is really important too. One of my instrumentals on the record is a tune called And Another Thing, which is really influenced by a Duke Ellington tune called Rubber Bottom (I originally misremembered it as a Louis Armstrong tune) — our guitar player put me onto that one.
