‘Escape Routes’ opens with swirling, reverb-drenched guitar tones that instantly create a dreamlike, expansive atmosphere. Inspired by legends like Radiohead and Pink Floyd, the track builds layers of sound that draw you in, with frontman Curtis’s vocals bringing a haunting sense of vulnerability. His delivery feels raw and exposed, perfectly complementing the song’s themes of feeling adrift and longing for connection.

The production, led by Lisa Murphy and engineered by Holly Rees at Blank Studios and Production Room, elevates the track has expansive feel, balancing its ambient elements with the grit of alternative rock. The use of reversed and delayed vocals adds another layer of texture, making the song feel both atmospheric and intimate.

The song, perhaps, is about feeling adrift, either from your own self, another person, or another thing, place, or time. When I hear the song, I hear a longing of some kind. It’s a very vulnerable song, one which I was, at first, worried about putting out. The whole ‘blown wide open’ lyric is about being in a state of vulnerability too, and hoping that someone has the humanity to pull you out of it. Although it may not sound like it, the song is about optimism and hope.

‘Escape Routes’ is a window into Porcelain’s evolving sound and artistic growth. Following on from the success of earlier tracks like ‘False Alarm’ and ‘Hearsay,’ both of which gained traction on BBC Introducing and Radio X, the band is gearing up for even more. Their next single, ‘The Opportunist,’ is set to drop in November 2024, and fans can catch them live on September 19th at The Grove, where they will be supporting Silk Road. VIEW TICKETS
