What are community authors?
Hailing from Newcastle, Porcelain – composed of Curtis, Dan, Adam, and Kane, capture crowds with their distinctive blend of alternative rock, characterised by emotive melodies and memorable lyrics, Porcelain is quickly becoming a band to watch. They have already garnered support from Radio X, Generator, and This Feeling, playing numerous shows across the UK.
The song’s origins lie in an intro chord progression that frontman Curtis Longstaff had held onto for years. The creative process began to take shape when Curtis met guitarist Dan Wright at university, and the two began crafting the song in their flat. Over time, it evolved into a full-band effort, with each member contributing to the structure. Bassist Kane Taylor and Drummer, Adam Tibke added rhythmic depth, giving the track its full, powerful sound.

QUOTE ABOUT THE TRACK
“I think we’ve all had those fleeting thoughts, where you wonder how different your life would be if you made drastic changes to it. We all wonder, I think, and there’s no harm in it. You have to reflect. Some of us are vocal about it and some others aren’t, but we all fantasise sometimes about this other life, that is usually unobtainable.
The Opportunist, a fictional character that the song is about, is a kind of embodiment of those fantasies in people, who actually acts on their impulse to achieve it, and to start anew. ‘The Opportunist’ as a song, in that sense, is about shedding your skin, becoming someone more than you are, leaving behind all that you know.
The cover artwork is a reflection of that feeling. I always, since the very beginning of the song existing, had this image invoked in me of this very corporate, grey person, fleeing the city, slowly losing their suit as they run into the wilderness. I think it’d be an amazing music video, hopefully one day!
The initial form of this song just sort of spilled out of me in one go when I was about 17, at a time when I worried constantly about losing grip on my future and my situation. The song evolved into something more when I showed it to the guys, and it went on its own journey too. I think we all feel the emotive power in it when we play it live. It really comes out in us when we play it, this feeling of being free, of letting go.
The lyric ‘This time, I mean it when I say goodbye. I’m hungry for the last time‘ is meant to give this feeling of liberation, like you’re taking your life into your own hands. The final lyric of the song, ‘is this my last chance?‘ is about feeling the adrenaline of this liberation. It’s meant to represent the inner question that a lot of us feel at some point in our lives.”
