For as long as I can remember I loved Fast Car more than anything else Iโd heard from Tracy Chapman. Itโs what everyone talked about when they said her name, and itโs an all-time classic without a doubt. Then one day I was listening to her greatest hits (itโs something of a weekly ritual) and the tribal beauty of the melody in Crossroads hit me. 23 years ago today a little-known band released whatโs still their best album and changed my life. I was 11, I started to hear the likes of โWhy does it always rain on me?โ and โDriftwoodโ on the radio and I was hooked.
