Hi – It’s Dave here at Mumubl.com, welcome to our recommendation email where I give you some tips on what’s great to listen to and watch.

It’s amazing to see how much live music is going on at the moment, not just the wall to wall coverage of Glastonbury on the BBC but everywhere I look there are gigs going on, Bryan Adams even dropping into my old home town of Widnes! My social media is covered with people watching live music which is fantastic and has me looking forward even more to the gigs I’ve got tickets for in the coming months.

But if you’ve got chance between gigs here’s a bumper packed recommendation email with a few things for you to check out. Hope you enjoy some of them, I certainly did.

Jagged

Almost everyone alive in 1995 will have heard of “Jagged Little Pill” whether they listened to it or not, the “10,000 spoons when all you need is a knife” from Ironic well known to many over the years. I remember having a copy on tape and loving it. In the wake of Alanis Morissette’s COVID delayed 25 year anniversary tour this great documentary from HBO landed on Sky in the UK and it is fantastic. The story of the album, the tour, the early years of Alanis are all compelling. The footage from the live shows is so energetic and the evolution of the album and it’s popularity is compelling. A little strange now seeing Taylor Hawkins as a talking head after his recent death.

Glastonbury on the BBC

There are a great many jokey tweets about the BBC’s wall to wall coverage of Glastonbury and it’s oversized place in the national broadcasts interests. But that said if you’ve got the footage from all the main stages then why not show it? The McCartney set from the Saturday night got all the plaudits and not just for rolling out Dave Grohl and Bruce Springsteen, but there are some great sets hiding on the iPlayer hub. Wet Leg, Noel Gallagher and many others.

I’m not a huge fan of rewatching live music on TV but the wealth of content is great for a browse and to dip in and out of.

Pistol

It feels like it’s maybe a little soft around edges for a show about an unflinching punk band, and there are reported disputes in terms of the exact story but The FX series, appearing on Disney+, is a cracking retelling of the history of the Sex Pistols. Director Danny Boyle takes us right through the formation of the group to their chaotic US tour and subsequent fall out, all based on Steve Jones’ memoir “Lonely Boy”.

It’s probably not one for die hard punk fans, but it certainly lends an interest and understanding to the early days of punk.

So your song went viral on Tik Tok what’s next?

I’m a little old for it I guess, I only recently signed up to Tik Tok, I don’t really use it either, just to see what the fuss was about. It does seem to be having an big impact on the music industry in general, the complaints from numerous artists about being forced to generate content for the platform recently going viral.

This podcast episode from the always great Switched on Pop provides some great insight into the whole phenomenon and the impact of breaking new artists. If you’re not sure what’s going on with music and Tik Tok there’s plenty to get your teeth into.

The Inquiry – Is Spotify killing the music industry?

I mentioned this one on the last email but it’s well worth a listen. From the BBC, this episode of “The Inquiry” promises an answer to it’s title question, then fails to really deliver one. Check out my last piece on this, no, broadly I don’t think Spotify is killing the industry. Despite it’s failure to give an answer though it has some great content and opinions documenting the troubles there are with the whole streaming model.

New Releases

As well as great lives shows all the time there appear to be some fantastic new releases dropping constantly as well. “Raw data feel” from Everything Everything has found a place on repeat in my listening. Regina Spektor’s “Home, before and after” is brilliant album as well, second track “Up the mountain” a standout for me. Jack Johnson returns doing Jack Johnson on “Meet the Moonlight” and I’m enjoying the new Paolo Nutini album as I type this. All albums worthy of your consideration.
